title: Record of Lodoss War

New Characters:

KING BELD of Maamo wants to subjugate all of Lodoss in the name
of Faralis, Goddess of Destruction. He has Kaala and Bagnard,
two powerful magicians on his side. He commands an army of humans,
elves (mostly dark elves) and monsters. A fierce fighter and
merciless King, King Beld rules through fear and terror.

ASHURAM, the Black Night of Maamo, is King Beld's successor. He leads
King Belds troops in their invasion of Arania. He dislikes the Witch
Kaala, intensely. He is highly skilled in combat, and seems relatively
honourable. Those under his command fear and respect him.

BAGNARD in King Belds's court magician. He dislikes Kaala. He believes
he has sufficient power for Maamo's needs, and she is not required.
Oddly enough, Bagnard and Elm, court magician to King Faan or Varis,
were classmates in the school where they learned magic. The school was
destroyed some time ago, and Bagnard is suspected to have been
involved.

Record of Lodoss War #3:
........................

The Knight in Black

To the south of Lodoss is the island of Maamo. Far beneath the earth,
Naas stirs in his sleep.
"The time has come," states King Beld. He has decided that the
incasion of Lodoss will begin in the morning. Ashuram and Bagnard are
both agreeable. Kaala suddenly appears. She, too, thinks this is a
good course of action.
Gimu tutors Parn in the fine art of combat. Eto is worried that Parn
may get hurt, Surein tells him not to be concerned.
Close by, troops muster at a fort near the border of the country of
Arania. Parn is frustrated by his inexperience. He is about to
practice on a tree when a voice calls out.
Deedlit "Don't harm it with that foul thing!"
Parn "Your... from before..."
Deedlit "I am Deedlit."
Parn "Deedlit...?"
Deedlit "There are spirits in all living things. Didn't you know?"
Parn "S-sorry, just didn't know what I was doing."
Parn thanks her for her hlep back at Zakson. Her warning spared the
village much trouble.
Ant further conversation is interrupted by several unwanted guests.
Deedlit spots Parn as an amature almost immdeiately.
"You're very rash, aren't you?"
"You're in danger, so go hide!"
"They're the ones in danger."
The leader, a dark elf, appears.
Deedlit takes off after him, leaving Parn to handle the others. But
the dark elf is too much for her, and she is forced to return.
Eto, Surein, and Gimu have heard the fighting, and come to help.
Gimu seems more annoyed than concerned.
"What are you playing at ?!"
"Well ! You mean that this looks like playing to you, Dwarf?" asks
Deedlit. The dark elf abruptly orders a retreat. Parn is thrilled to
see the Aranian soldiers, but his happiness is short-lived.
Thrown in the dungeon until the fort's commander return, they meet the
dungeon's only other (humaniod) resident: Uddo Chak.
Note: I have used straight romanization for this character's name,
mostly because I refuse to call a grown "Woodchuck".
The idea of sharing a prison cell with a common thief is not very
appealing. The dark elf, actually one of Ashuram's scouts, reports his
findings. He fears that the Aranian soldiers may know of the
impending invasion, and that they may warn King Fann of Varis.
As this would be detrimental to King Beld's plans, Ashuram decides to
attack and destroy the Arian fort. Even though Kaala reminds him that
this is not his duty.
South of Aranian is thge country of Kanon. There, King Beld's army
waits outside the capital, Shinning Hill. They are preparing to
attack, and win gack the power for Faralis, Godess of Destruction.
In the dungeon, Parn talks to Uddo. This is very enlightening, because
Uudo, in the course of his usual occupation, has found out all about
the invasion from Maamo.
Commander Jebura finally comes down to the dungeon to see the
prisoners, whom his men claim are spies.
They are released as soon as Commander Jebura notices the monumental
breach of etiquette his men have committed in throwing a priest of
Faris in the dungeon. Commander Jebura apologizes profusely.
Surein asks about Uddo, who isn't pleased to be the only one who
wasn't released.
"Dammit! Why just me? What did I do?"
Commander Jebura fears that what Uddo said maybe true, and there will
be war again, soon.
The Commander is called away by his men for sword practice.
Deedlit watches, and says that humans are very violent.
Commander Jebura challenges Parn, who accepts.
Durning the duel, the Commander has a proposition.
"Well, Parn? Won't you stay here, and train? If you do, you'll grow
stronger. Arania needs strong soldiers."
"Commander..."
"Think about what I've said."
"The Army..."
That night, surein and Deedlit sense a magical attact. Parn is down in
the dungeon, talking to Uddo. Parn's blind faith in the invincibility
of Varis is shaken, as Uddo convinces him that the danger to Lodoss is
real. Uddo is trying to get Parn to let him out, when the attack
begins. Parn goes up to help after telling Uddo he'll be back.
Surein is sure that magic is being used. Outside Ashurm is annoyed by
Kaala's unnecessary display.
Parn goes back to save Uddo, who despite the tough-guy act, is finding
it hard to believe that Parn bothered to come back at all.
The fort is in ruins, and Commander Jebura, severely injured, refuses
to allow Eto to heal him. He commands Parn and the others to leave,
but he won't go himself.
"I still have something I must do, got it? Go."
"Commander!"
"Parn, you wil be a fine knight."
